Filmmaker Brandy Yanchyk is so excited to be making her second documentary for the Ukrainian Resource and Development Centre - MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alberta!

This new documentary is about Dr. Roman Petryshyn. Dr. Petryshyn was appointed as Member to the Order of Canada on September 27th, 2021 and Brandy Yanchyk made this short video about him to celebrate. Click here to see the video.

Brandy loves learning about her Ukrainian Canadian heritage and the people who have worked so hard to keep this culture thriving across the country and in Alberta.

Roman has also helped lots of people in Ukraine by organizing some amazing programs.

It was a wonderful opportunity to meet many of the Indigenous tourism operators who are offering incredible, authentic First Nations experiences in Alberta.

The Summit was held at the Grey Eagle Resort & Casino on Tsuut’ina Nation land in Calgary.

Last month we had a wonderful time in Toronto, Ontario filming with Nadima Kinjo, a newcomer from Syria, and Cara Benjamin-Pace, the Executive Director of Newcomer Kitchen at The Depanneur.

Nadima taught me a Syrian recipe for season three of my travel series Seeing Canada. You'll be able to watch the new episodes in 2022 on public TV stations in the USA including on PBS and Create TV and also on Amazon Prime Video around the world.

Newcomer Kitchen started in 2016 as a nonprofit organization that invited Syrian refugee women to cook a weekly meal in a kitchen. The meals were sold online and the proceeds shared among the cooks. It developed into a catering and cooking workshop social enterprise. Newcomer Kitchen now trains newcomer women from all over the world to start their own food businesses. Using real time food events it creates an experiential learning environment and revenue goes to the trainees.

Recently filmmaker, Brandy Yanchyk, filmed in Southwestern Ontario for season three of her travel series Seeing Canada. You'll be able to watch the new episodes in 2022 on PBS stations, Create TV and on Amazon Prime Video.

In this new episode about Southwestern Ontario Brandy Yanchyk will be learning about Canada’s connection to the Underground Railway.

The Underground Railroad was not an actual railroad, but instead, a secret network of people who helped around 40,000 African Americans escape slavery from the United States.

The province of Ontario was the main terminus for the Underground Railway.

Brandy will be visiting museums and monuments and meeting descendants of the Freedom Seekers who used the Underground Railway to escape being enslaved in the United States.

Here are some photos of the filming at Uncle Tom's Cabin Historic Site in Dresden, Ontario.

At the site you will learn all about Josiah Henson who inspired the book "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe.

"After escaping to Upper Canada (now Ontario) from slavery in Maryland and Kentucky, Josiah Henson established himself as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, travelling the clandestine network of paths and safehouses in reverse.
